Residency & Fellowship

Greetings!  Congratulations on deciding to embark upon a career in psychiatry.  The transition from student to physician is a huge one.  It’s exciting to be finished with medical school, and hearing a patient call you doctor for the first time is bound to be one of those unforgettable moments in your life.  The transition from medical school to residency training can also be a time of uncertainty and anxiety as you move to a position with significantly more responsibility than you experienced as a student.  The Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency program is sensitive to the stresses, good and bad, of the evolution to physician, and ultimately, to an independent psychiatrist.  It is our goal to assist you in any way that we can with a successful transition and to position you on a path of lifelong learning and success (as you define it)!

Psychiatry is a fascinating and very gratifying field, and one that desperately needs more caring and compassionate practitioners amongst its ranks. The Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Program recognizes the great need for an increased number of practicing psychiatrists, especially in Iowa.  The need for more clinical psychiatrists is at the root of our very clinically-oriented program, striving to educate physicians who want to provide exemplary, evidence-based psychiatric care to patients.  Residents receive exposure to research, scholarly activity and administration to provide a well-rounded experience that complements clinical training.

Residents in our psychiatry residency program spend time in three different medical settings for core rotations.  Broadlawns Medical Center, UnityPoint Health-Des Moines, and the Central Iowa Veteran’s Administration Hospital have longstanding traditions of collaboration in providing superior medical education to students and residents.  Residents attend to a very diverse patient population within three different systems, again, providing a well-rounded experience.  With support, education, and supervision from our experienced faculty, residents graduate with a sense of competence and confidence as they enter independent practice.

The Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Program seeks to understand the unique strengths, interests, and learning style of each individual resident, and to use that understanding to help provide each resident with the best possible residency experience.  The flexibility of the fourth year allows residents to, with assistance from faculty, create a program of study that is best for them.  It is an opportunity to explore special interests, gain more experience in areas where a resident might feel less confident, and to prepare for the next step in their career.  Please review the later sections about curriculum to further explore the fourth year options as well as seeing what the first three years hold.

Thank you for your interest in our program.  Please know that I am available to discuss any questions that you may have.  Again, you’ve made a great choice in a career in psychiatry, and I’m confident that you would be very pleased with the training you would receive in the Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency training program.

Warm regards,
