Family Medicine Continuity Clinic:  2 hours per day, 2 days per week

Call Requirements: When on inpatient services at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children’s hospital, residents share call on that service.  Night Float: 4 weeks total; done in two 2 week blocks throughout the year.  Residents also have 13 weekend calls throughout the academic year.

Vacation - R1:   Three weeks of vacation (Monday through Sunday) are scheduled for first-year residents.  This consists of one two week block and one additional week.  Please refer to page 13 of this handbook for more details on vacation scheduling.

Family Medicine Continuity Clinic:  Three 1/2 days per week.

Transitional Year Medicine Continuity Clinic: ½ day per week

Vacation - Transitional Year: Three weeks of vacation (Monday through Sunday) are scheduled for first-year residents. Please refer to the TYR handbook for more details on vacation scheduling.

Electives:

During their programs residents may spend up to 18 weeks in elective rotations in the areas of their special interest.  These rotations are primarily spent in specialist's private offices and are available through the scheduling and faculty member.  Specially arranged electives in areas other than those already established can also be developed depending upon the residents’ interests’ objectives and expectations.  Currently the program offers electives in:

  • Perinatology

  • Hem/Oncology
  • Psychiatry
  • Endocrine (Peds/Adult)
  • Ortho (Peds/ Adult)

  • Infectious Disease
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Pathology
  • Sports Med
  • Rheumatology
  • Radiology
  • Hospice/Palliative Care
  • Independent Study/ Research

Procedure Workshops and Experiences:

In addition to the required and elective rotations, Family Medicine Residents will participate in a series of procedural workshops throughout the residency program.

These include: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation and Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advance Trauma Life Support.

Additional procedural experiences may be obtained in:

  • Endoscopy
  • Joint injections/ Aspirations
  • Obstetrical Ultrasound
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound
