Daisy Awards
The DAISY award was begun by the DAISY Foundation in 2000 by members of the family of Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 of complications of ITP. The Barnes family wanted to do something to honor their son, so they came up with the name DAISY – Diseases Attacking the Immune System, and established a foundation. They kept thinking about the amazing care he and their family received from Pat’s nurses. They were so impressed by the care, compassion, and kindness brought to his bedside every day. As a result of their experience, the Barnes Family believes that nurses are the unsung heroes of our society who deserve much more recognition and honor. So, they created the DAISY award for extraordinary nurses!
Here are Broadlawns, a subcommittee of our Nursing Professionalism Council has implemented the DAISY award program. We receive nominations, the committee meets to review those and then selects our quarterly honoree.
Each honoree receives a sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch” as a symbol of their recognition. Each piece is hand-carved for the Foundation by artists of the Shone Tribe in Zimbabwe. The Foundation chose this beautiful design not only because it so sensitively depicts the unique relationship nurses have with their patients, but also because the Shona people hold their healers in a position of great importance to the community, and feel about their healers the way The DAISY Foundation and Broadlawns feel about nurses.
Each honoree also receives a cookie bouquet from Cookies by Design – we thank them for supporting this award!
Cinnamon cookies or rolls are also part of the celebration for the DAISY award. Cinnamon is significant because when Patrick was in the hospital, and had no appetite, treats with cinnamon were the only thing that he wanted to eat, and he wanted them brought to all his nurses, as well. We want nurses to remember anytime that they smell cinnamon, why they are a nurse and how special and appreciated they are!
A banner hangs in the department of the winning nurse each quarter and another near the cafeteria. The banners have the honoree’s pictures on them and signatures of all past Broadlawns honorees.
