Broadlawns Expands Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit

Broadlawns Lower Level Inpatient Behavioral Health Four Season Room

Des Moines, IA (November 8, 2017) – Broadlawns Medical Center (BMC) announced that its Inpatient Behavioral Health unit has expanded by 14 beds as of today.  The newly constructed 14-bed unit is located on the lower level of the Sands Building and brings Broadlawns to its licensed capacity with 44 inpatient mental health beds.

“Broadlawns is proud to be a leading mental healthcare provider in central Iowa,” said Jody Jenner, President and CEO of BMC. “We’ve expanded our inpatient capacity by nearly 50% in an effort to address the shortfall of available inpatient beds for mental health patients in our community.”

In March of 2016, Broadlawns completed a transformative renovation of its existing 30-bed Inpatient Behavioral Health unit to provide a state-of-the-art and therapeutic environment. The new lower level unit incorporates similar aesthetics with the addition of a four season room that will enable access to sunlight and views of the woodlands that surround the property.  The new unit will largely focus on treating patients who have been diagnosed with major depression.

“We are excited to be on the cutting edge of mental healthcare with a state-of-the-art unit that is focused on serving patients with major depression,” said Steve Johnson, Behavioral Health Administrator for BMC. “Depression is a leading disorder that impacts millions of adults in the United States, and we are extremely fortunate to have such a tremendous facility and team of dedicated professionals to address these needs here in Des Moines.”

Broadlawns expanded its Outpatient Mental Health Clinic in the newly constructed Broadlawns Medical Plaza in March 2017. The Crisis Observation Center was relocated to the north end of BMC in June 2017. In addition to assisting the Des Moines Police Department with the Mobile Crisis Team, Broadlawns administers a 24/7 crisis line for those facing a mental health emergency at (515) 282-5752.
