Megan Kane, DO, Named Chief Resident at Broadlawns Medical Center

Des Moines, December 22, 2010 – Megan Kane, DO has been elected by her fellow residents at Broadlawns Medical Center to serve as chief resident. She will serve in the leadership position for the hospital’s family residency program for six months from January 1 through June 30, 2011. Kane will succeed Michelle Heim, DO, who has served as chief resident since July 2010. Megan Kane, DO

“I look forward to working with Dr. Kane, who has earned the respect of her peers as a leader in the resident program at Broadlawns Medical Center,” said Larry Severidt, MD, director of medical education and director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. “The leadership from our chief residents continues to set high standards for the program at Broadlawns. We are extremely proud of the young leaders that are coming through our program.”   

Kane entered the Broadlawns’ Family Medicine Residency Program in 2009 after receiving her medical degree from Des Moines University. She received her undergraduate degree from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., in 2005.

"It is an honor and a privilege to be elected to serve in this position with my peers at Broadlawns," said Dr. Kane . "The Family Medicine Residency Program at Broadlawns is recognized as a leader in medical training, and our work here is preparing us to serve confidently as highly qualified physicians when we leave." 

As chief resident, Kane will serve as the liaison between the residents and administration, developing the resident call schedule and keeping the residents informed about organizational policy and procedures.  

With a history that reaches back to 1903 as a community health center, Broadlawns Medical Center first opened its doors as a hospital to the residents of Polk County on April 13, 1924.  Over the years, Broadlawns has adapted to the changing demands of public health care, yet remained true to its mission of offering quality health services to all Polk County residents and training tomorrow’s health care professionals. Today, Broadlawns Medical Center is composed of: 

  • An acute care community hospital serving medical, surgical, mental health and primary care needs
  • A 60-member physician practice overseeing numerous specialty clinics and outpatient services
  • A Family Medicine Residency Program that graduates physician leaders who today serve in 22 of Iowa’s 99 counties
