10 nominated for Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award

Des Moines, IA – March 2013 – Third-year students of the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine submitted nominations recognizing 10 Broadlawns Medical Center resident physicians who have demonstrated excellence in “showing a commitment to teaching and compassionate treatment of patients and families, students and colleagues.”

Drs. Nathan Allen; Gary Andelin; Stephen Barnes; Amanda Lee; Elizabeth Lester; Cassidy Long; Ashley McCurry; Sara Norris; Samuel Stanton; and Heidi Van Maanen were nominated for the Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award.

“While being part of the development of the next generation of medical providers is reward in and of itself, this more formal and public recognition by DMU students is both appreciated and valued, said Dr. Larry Severidt, Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Broadlawns.  “All of our Residents are serious about their commitment to teaching and we are proud of our unique and important role in the education process.”

This is the first year DMU students have been able to nominate resident physicians for the Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award.  Sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation (http://humanism-in-medicine.org/), the Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award will be given annually to resident physicians who are compassionate, excellent teachers. Two resident physicians will be selected from the group of all who were nominated.
