ARNP and Physician Assistant
Psychiatry Fellowship


July 1st - June 30th




Health insurance, retirement, malpractice insurance, 2 weeks vacation, CME, state licensure


  • Mid-Level Provider with Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant education
  • Active Iowa license


This twelve month fellowship will include in-depth clinical and educational training.  Fellows will have the opportunity to rotate through various Behavioral Health services under the close supervision of practicing psychiatrist, ARNPs and PAs.

Core Educational Blocks will include:

  • Psychiatric inpatient unit - 8 weeks
  • Outpatient substance abuse program/intensive outpatient program - 4 weeks
  • Consultation Liaison Psychiatry including rotation with crisis team - 4 weeks
  • Continuous mental health outpatient clinic in the afternoons, except didactic days
  • Mental Health Crisis Unit at Broadlawns Emergency Room - 4 weeks 
  • Outpatient Child Psychiatry half days - 4 weeks
  • Psychiatry and Medical Electives

Core Program Objectives

  • Acquire skills to evaluate the psychiatric patient by writing comprehensive psychiatric assessments and progress notes with feeback from supervisors
  • Learn to conceptualize the basic diagnostic psychosocial formulation and work with patients to create treatment plans
  • Implementaion of treatment/therapy plans
  • Competently and safely utilize Psychopharmacology therapy in various treatment settings
  • Acquire broader understanding and utilization of DSM-5 criteria for diagnosing various mental illnesses
  • Acquire cultural and ethical competency while dealing with patients from diverse racial, religious, and socioeconomoic backgrounds
  • Acquire increased competency in providing medical and psychiatric education to patients and their caregivers while implementing a biopsychosocial model
