Smoking Cessation Classes
Broadlawns Medical Center is making changes to the smoking cessation program. The program is being offered to the Des Moines and surrounding communities:

- Enhanced support to increase your success
Classes are offered weekly from January through December.
Tuesday nights – Either FFS or QS
Thursday nights – TGIF (Enhanced support and reinforcement)

Freedom From Smoking
This is an eight-week program sponsored by the American Lung Association.
Fee is $25 per person.

Quit Smart
This five-week smoking cessation class utilizes a kit in addition to personalized instructions for quitting. Quit Smart combines several powerful treatment elements—hypnosis (CD), medication recommendations and a patented simulated cigarette—to produce a potent stop-smoking treatment.
The program was developed by Dr. Robert Shipley, Director of the Duke Medical Center Stop Smoking Clinic.
Fee is $25 per person.

Thank Goodness I'm Free (TGIF) Smoking Cessation Support Group
This support group is open to anyone who is actively trying to quit smoking or who is tobacco free.

Group Hypnosis
Two different group hypnosis sessions will be available to assist you with your goal to stop smoking. Debra McKenzie, a certified hypnotist, will first meet with you personally and then offer five additional group hypnosis sessions to assist you with this goal.
If you are trying to quit and you have tried everything, maybe it is time to try something different.

Weight Watchers Meetings
Meetings at work provide a motivating environment led by a leader who has lost weight with Weight Watchers and kept it off. Each weigh-in is confidential. Plus, you can subscribe to eTools, the Internet companion for meetings. Weight Watchers is an integrated approach emphasizing good eating choices, healthy habits, a supportive environment and exercise. Community Support Groups
Lupus/Fibromyalgia
Gain support and knowledge from people who are experiencing what you are. This support group provides a wealth of knowledge, support, friendships and fun. Please join us. Light refreshment served.
This group is open to the public and meets monthly on the 3rd Thursday from March through November. Free membership.

Parenting - Raising a Resilient Child
This is a nine-week class.

The primary objective of this parenting program is to assist parents in raising resilient children in a consistent and predictable manner. You will learn to foster strength, hope and optimism in your child.
We will address the following:
- Being empathetic
- Changing negative scripts
- Disciplining in ways that promote self-discipline and self-worth
- Teaching children to solve problems and make decisions
- Loving children in ways that help them feel special and appreciated
- Helping children recognize that mistakes are experiences from which to learn
- Helping children experience success by identifying and reinforcing their islands of competence

Concentration in Leadership Training
This class is open to individuals who currently possess a bachelor or masters degree. This class is part of a 15 credit leadership curriculum. The hours earned from this training may be applied toward your masters if you currently hold a bachelors degree.
If you currently hold a masters degree, you may apply the 15 credit hours toward a doctorate.
The next class begins on Monday, Feb. 2!
ALOP 245 Leadership Essentials (3)
The course is designed to last 10 weeks and will meet on Mondays for 3.5 hours. Students should be prepared for extensive homework including reading, writing papers and participating in group sessions.

The cost per credit hour is $380. Drake is allowing Broadlawns students to pre-payroll deduct for their class. You may begin this as soon as possible. Please contact Gail Miller if you would like to start this today!
