Broadlawns Behavioral Health Department and the Psychiatry Residency Program

Broadlawns Medical Center is the leading behavioral health provider in Central Iowa. Providing inpatient, outpatient and community-based services, the Broadlawns Behavioral Health staff is comprised of 12 psychiatrists, 9 mid-level providers and 5 psychologists.

The Broadlawns 30-bed inpatient behavioral health unit was entirely renovated in April 2016 and an expanded 14-bed unit that emphasizes treatment for patients with major depression opened in November 2017.

The Broadlawns Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic was expanded and relocated to the Broadlawns Medical Plaza in March of 2017 and accommodated 57,000 outpatient visits last year. Broadlawns has a robust community-based program and administers the Mobile Crisis Team, Crisis Observation Center and Crisis Stabilization Center for Polk County. There are also two residential facilities for patients in need of extended care.

In July 2018, the Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Program will welcome its inaugural class of psychiatric residents. The program will provide the full spectrum of clinical rotations that are required for psychiatry training including: inpatient and outpatient adult, geriatric, children/adolescent, consult, liaison and addiction treatment. Residents are also required to have experience in community psychiatry including psychosocial rehabilitation and community resources and case management.

Residents will spend time in three different settings for core rotations including:  Broadlawns Medical Center, UnityPoint Health-Des Moines and the Central Iowa Veteran’s Administration Hospital.  All three medical facilities have longstanding traditions of collaboration in providing superior medical education to students and residents.

Broadlawns Medical Center is dedicated to training the next generation of medical providers. The Broadlawns Family Medicine Residency Programs was established in 1971 and is one of the first fully-accredited programs in the Midwest. Broadlawns offers fellowship training in Foot and Ankle Trauma and offers a Psychiatry fellowship for mid-level providers.
