Welcome

For more than ninety years, Broadlawns Medical Center has dedicated itself to providing quality healthcare to patients, regardless of their ability to pay for services. Also central to the Broadlawns mission is our commitment to training the next generation of healthcare providers and leaders.

Broadlawns has a history of training interns that spans more than 60 years. In 1971 Broadlawns established itself as a leader in Family Medicine training with one of the first fully accredited family practice programs in the Midwest. This program provides three years of comprehensive training in family medicine with positions for up to 30 resident physicians. Broadlawns also offers a transitional year program for four resident physicians desiring a comprehensive year of primary care training prior to entering another specialty.

Curriculum for both programs are designed to meet all requirements of the residency review committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Broadlawns Medical Center is the largest publicly funded hospital in Iowa and provides a unique and challenging environment for learning. Residents in our programs experience complex healthcare issues that are not common to most programs. Broadlawns’ residents also have the opportunity to participate in international medicine. We have established a relationship with the OB department at Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa, Honduras that enables our residents to have a high-volume OB experience. The teaching faculty within our program is firmly committed to the mission of teaching and caring for our community.

Our graduates complete our program as well-rounded, competently trained physician leaders who are prepared to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

We are particularly pleased that many of our graduates choose to live in Iowa. Many are serving in rural communities. Since establishing the three-year Family Medicine Residency Program, Broadlawns Medical Center has graduated over 600 resident physicians, with over half currently practicing in the state of Iowa.

It is a privilege to work at Broadlawns, and all of us associated with the Family Medicine Residency and Transitional Year Programs look forward to continuing our tradition of excellence.
