Broadlawns to Reopen Renovated
Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit

Des Moines, IA (March 29, 2016) – Broadlawns Medical Center announced the completion of extensive renovations to its Inpatient Behavioral Health unit.  The 30 bed unit will reopen later this week after undergoing a transformative six month renovation initiative that includes enhanced patient rooms, treatment suites, group activity accommodations, clinical consultation spaces and visitor areas.

“This new Inpatient Behavioral Health center is the culmination of many years of planning, financial contributions from public and private entities, and hard work and dedication on the part of many people. Broadlawns has a history of providing superior behavioral healthcare to the residents of Polk County and the new facility will enhance that commitment, said Dr. Mary Krieg, Chairperson of the Broadlawns Medical Center Board of Trustees.  “We are looking forward to improved outcomes, with shorter lengths of stay and even greater patient satisfaction, propelling us towards our mission of becoming the best public hospital in America.”

The renovations to the existing Inpatient Behavioral Health unit are part of a multi-faceted expansion of Broadlawns’ behavioral health facilities.  Construction commenced in October 2015 on a 72,000 square foot medical clinic building on the eastern edge of the campus that will house the Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic.  Scheduled for completion in March 2017, the new Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic is expected to expand access to services by at least 40 percent.  Broadlawns intends to add 14 additional beds and further expand its Inpatient Behavioral Health unit by making permanent renovations to the lower level of the Sands Building which has served as the temporary Inpatient Behavioral Health unit during this initial phase of construction.

“We’re thrilled to be moving into the renovated space, and our staff is grateful to everyone who helped make this possible.” said Janice Landy, MD, Broadlawns Psychiatry Section Chief.   “Patients will receive care within a state-of-the-art medical environment that is much more therapeutic.  We anticipate the renovated setting will greatly enhance the inpatient mental healthcare provided at Broadlawns.”

The newly renovated Inpatient Behavioral Health unit will be open to the public on Thursday, March 31st from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.  The unit is located on the main floor of the hospital’s Sands Building.
