Broadlawns Nurse Receives National Recognition

Des Moines, IA  (May 29, 2015) – Broadlawns Medical Center (BMC) is pleased to announce that Gayle McCudden, an LPN from the Broadlawns Family Health Center, has been awarded The DAISY Award, a national award presented to extraordinary nurses.

Ms. McCudden was nominated for the award by several Broadlawns patients, and she was recognized amongst her peers at a recent award ceremony where she was presented with a certificate, pin and A Healer’s Touch sculpture.

“Broadlawns is proud to participate in The DAISY Award program and to honor the nurses who personify our shared commitment to providing expert clinical care and an exceptional patient experience,” said Susan Kirstein, Broadlawns Chief Nursing Officer.

About the Honoree
Ms. McCudden was raised in Indianola, Iowa and graduated from Indianola High School. She earned her Licensed Practical Nursing diploma through the nursing program at Des Moines Area Community College.  She was inspired to become a nurse after receiving exemplary care from a labor and delivery nurse while giving birth to her son, Timothy.  There were complications with his delivery, and her son only lived a short while. The nurse that attended to her demonstrated such compassion and reassurance that Ms. McCudden decided to become a nurse with hopes of becoming an equally compassionate caregiver.  With nearly three decades of experience, Ms. McCudden joined the Broadlawns staff in November of 2012.  She is a phone nurse that patiently and reassuringly administers quality care with a calm voice and an empathetic attitude.

 About the Daisy Award
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation was formed in January 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an autoimmune disease. The Barnes family was awestruck by the exceptional nursing care that their son Patrick received throughout his eight week illness, and they established The DAISY Award as a national award to recognize the extraordinary clinical skills and compassionate care that nurses provide to patients every day. The DAISY Award program at Broadlawns is administered by the Broadlawns Nursing Professional Practice Council.
