Prairie Meadows Awards Legacy Grant to Mental Health Starts With Me Initiative

Des Moines, IA (August 9, 2016) – The Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation was awarded a $100,000 Legacy Grant from Prairie Meadows in support of its Mental Health Starts With Me initiative and will be recognized at today’s Prairie Meadows Impact luncheon.  The Prairie Meadows Legacy Grant program provides financial support to projects that significantly impact the betterment of the community.

The Prairie Meadows Legacy Grant funding was given in support of the Mental Health Starts With Me initiative to renovate and expand the behavioral healthcare facilities at Broadlawns Medical Center.  Specifically, funding from the Legacy Grant was designated toward the Family and Visitor Lounge within the recently renovated Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit.  The 30 bed inpatient unit underwent a transformative renovation and was reopened on April 2, 2016. Improvements to the inpatient unit included enhanced patient rooms, group activity accommodations, and spaces that can be used for clinical consultation and private visits with family and friends.

“We’re so grateful to Prairie Meadows for their support of Broadlawns and our behavioral health program,” said Janice Landy, MD, Broadlawns Psychiatry Section Chief.  “Their financial gift is significant, but their voice of support for those suffering from mental illness in our community is equally important.  The renovations to our Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit were sorely needed.  The enhanced space offers a more pleasant and therapeutic environment.  We are so pleased to have areas for patients to visit more privately with staff, and with their family and friends.”

The renovations to the existing Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit are part of a multi-faceted expansion of Broadlawns’ behavioral health facilities.  Construction commenced in October 2015 on a 72,000 square foot medical clinic building on the eastern edge of the campus that will house the Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic.  Scheduled for completion in March 2017, the new Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic is expected to expand access to services by at least 40 percent.  Broadlawns intends to add 14 additional beds and further expand its Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit by making permanent renovations to the lower level of the Sands Building which served as the temporary Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit during the initial phase of construction.  The inpatient expansion is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2017.
