TECH and TEACH Programs Perpetuate the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King

Spring 2018 TECH Graduates

Des Moines, IA (April 4, 2018) – Today marks the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination, and Broadlawns Medical Center (BMC) is collaborating with Urban Dreams on initiatives to perpetuate the legacy of Dr. King’s advocacy for societal change.  BMC announced today that its spring class of Training and Education for a Career in Healthcare (TECH) participants have earned their basic and advanced Certified Nursing Assistant degrees and have graduated from the TECH program.

“Since implementing the TECH and TEACH job training initiatives in the fall of 2016, 36 participants have completed the program,” said Jody Jenner, President and CEO of BMC. “We are extremely proud to employ 25 of our TECH and TEACH graduates here at Broadlawns, and we look forward to seeing how their careers in healthcare continue to grow.”

“The TECH and TEACH programs were developed in the spirit of Martin Luther King,” said Wayne Ford, Founder of Urban Dreams and Community Advocate for Broadlawns.  “Jody Jenner and I traveled to Baltimore and met with city officials and leaders from Johns Hopkins Hospital to draw inspiration for how we could work together and tackle some of the challenges facing the low income residents of North Des Moines. The TECH and TEACH programs give individuals the opportunity to become self-sufficient and productive members of our society.”

The TECH program is one component of the Broadlawns Local initiative to address social determinants of health within the neighborhoods surrounding the medical campus.  In an effort to assist individuals who are from at-risk and/or underserved backgrounds, participants in the TECH and TEACH (Training and Education for Adults for a Career in Healthcare) programs are comprised of individuals who have historically faced employment barriers. Participants receive soft skill training in professionalism and exposure to career opportunities that exist in healthcare.  Participants earn a basic and advanced Certified Nursing Assistant degree from DMACC as part of the TECH and TEACH training program.
