Highlighting Your Opportunities

Broadlawns Medical Center is a publicly-funded medical center with an unopposed family medicine program. Broadlawns has assembled an accomplished faculty who are dedicated to this residency program, which meets or exceeds all requirements of the residency review committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for family medicine and transitional residencies.

The county hospital setting is generally recognized as providing the most varied, hands-on experiences for resident physicians.  Residents have the opportunity to work with diverse population segments and experience firsthand an incomparable range of patient pathology, procedures and clinical care.

Facilities

Broadlawns Medical Center is a 200-bed, acute-care, fully accredited medical/surgical and psychiatric medical center. In August 2020, construction of the 41,900 square foot addition to the Sands inpatient hospital was completed. The new  floor includes 10 birthing suites, 6 ICU suites, and 20 med-surg suites. These up-to-date inpatient care areas create a wonderful learning environment where residents can serve their patients.

Broadlawns Family Health Center, established in 1973, is located on the Broadlawns Medical Center campus in the Medical Plaza building. The center has 24 exam rooms, a medical office laboratory, conference room, faculty offices and resident pods. The center is located in a culturally diverse urban neighborhood of mostly middle to low-income households. At the Family Health Center, residents gain outpatient and chronic disease management experiences as they develop their own “private practices”.

In addition to our state-of-the-art medical facilities, a limited number of on-site campus apartments are available for residents to rent. Both a 1-bedroom floor plan and a 2-bedroom floor plan are available. While living in the on-site housing, a unique sense of belonging to a truly supportive community quickly develops among the residents and their families. Living on campus allows for easy access to the Family Health Center and campus and helps to achieve a desirable balance of family and professional responsibility. Affiliated Programs

The Residency Programs are affiliated with the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.  As a member of the Des Moines Area Medical Education Consortium, Broadlawns has affiliations with Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children's Hospital.

Preceptorships

Alumni of the Broadlawns Family Medicine Residency Program actively support the program financially and educationally.  One such demonstration of support is offering family medicine preceptorships for residents.

This experience provides the resident with a working knowledge of private practice. As the residents gain insight into postgraduate practice opportunities, they are able to acquaint themselves with alumni practices in the Greater Des Moines area and across the country. Broadlawns alumni represent the spectrum of family medicine from rural practice to large medical centers.

Conferences

Each day at Broadlawns begins with morning report with residents, students and faculty in attendance.  Cases from the different hospital services are presented and discussed each morning. Noon lectures are provided by faculty physicians, as well as by visiting professors from various specialties.
