Coverage – What’s the Law?

The Affordable Care Act requires everyone legally living in the U.S. to have health insurance beginning January 1, 2014. If you do not have health insurance, you are required to sign up during open enrollment, now through March 31, 2014. You can shop for plans by phone, through a broker, at on-site enrollment locations, or at the online Health Insurance Marketplace. If you choose not to enroll for insurance, the law states that you will face tax penalties.

Informative (and Entertaining)

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation created a seven-minute video with YouToons walking through the basic changes in the way Americans will get health coverage and what it will cost starting this year (2014), when major parts of the Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare," go into effect.

Financial Assistance: Do I Qualify?

Some people are surprised that they qualify for financial help. It’s one of the first things the Broadlawns certified enrollment counselors look in to as they help you navigate your options.  You will find out exactly how much assistance you qualify for by calling 515.282.2246, stopping in to and meeting with one of the Broadlawns counselors or by applying at the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Quick Estimate

If you would like to get an estimate of your eligibility for subsidies and how much you could spend on health insurance before you shop the Marketplace or visit an enrollment counselor at Broadlawns, here is a way to do it. The Kaiser Family Foundation developed this tool to help estimate your health insurance premium or tax credit.

It only takes less than a minute and will entail filling in boxes such as - state, zip code, income, if you have employer coverage, number of people in your family, number of children, number of adults and tobacco users.

Healthcare Enrollment

Providing Access through Health Alliance

Broadlawns is a member of the University of Iowa Health Alliance made up of more than 50 hospitals and more than 160 physician clinics. That means you have access to a network of providers all across Iowa, eastern Nebraska and the Quad Cities (Illinois).

As a member, our patients can be included in health care coverage offered on the Iowa Health Insurance Exchange and through CoOportunity Health.

3 Key Points

When you shop the Marketplace, look for insurance plans that include Broadlawns Medical Center so you can use the full scope of this Health Alliance.

If you are enrolling in the Iowa Health and Wellness Plan, choose a primary care doctor at Broadlawns.

If you are enrolling in a commercial insurance, please confirm Broadlawns Medical Center is part of their network. It is highly likely we are, but again, please confirm.

Good News

With coverage through the Marketplace, you cannot be denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions and preventive care is included at no additional cost. Coverage includes:

  • doctor visits
  • hospital stays
  • wellness care
  • prescriptions
  • emergency services
  • maternity and newborn care
  • pediatric care

Essential Health Benefits include at least the following:

  • Ambulatory patient services – outpatient care you receive without being admitted to the hospital
  • Emergency services
  • Hospitalization
  • Maternity and newborn care – care before and after your baby is born
  • Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment – this includes counseling and psychotherapy
  • Prescription drugs
