Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Curriculum

Please note that in all programs, rotations and curriculum are subject to change.  Because our program is new, it is highly likely to change from year to year.

Year One

1 month ED
4 months Medicine, 2 months inpatient and 2 months ambulatory
2 months Neurology, 1 inpatient and 1 month ambulatory
5 months Inpatient Psychiatry at Lutheran and VA of Central Iowa
1 month Addiction Psychiatry

PGY1’s will do 2 weeks of evening float. Evening float is Noon - 10:00pm at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. PGY1’s will be with a senior resident.

Weekly Didactics on Thursday afternoon.

The didactic curriculum is designed to complement rotations offered and will include training in interviewing and assessment, psychopharmacology, psychopathology, neurology, neuroscience and psychotherapy as well as subspecialties in psychiatry.   


Year Two

4 months Inpatient Psychiatry at Lutheran and the VA
2 months Child/Adolescent Psychiatry at UnityPoint
3 months Consultation and Liaison Psychiatry at UnityPoint
1 month Geriatric Psychiatry
1 month Forensic and Correctional Psychiatry in the Iowa Department of Corrections/WRC
½ day/week of Outpatient Psychiatry at Broadlawns
1 month EM Psych

PGY2’s will do 8 weeks of evening float. Evening float is Noon - 10:00pm at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

The didactic curriculum is designed to complement rotations offered and will include training in interviewing and assessment, psychopharmacology, psychopathology, neurology, neuroscience and psychotherapy as well as subspecialties in psychiatry.   


Year Three

12 months Outpatient Psychiatry
Will include training in pharmacotherapies, psychotherapies, telemedicine, addiction psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry.

PGY3’s will do 3 weeks of evening float. Evening float is Noon - 10:00pm at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

Weekly Didactics on Thursday afternoon.

The didactic curriculum is designed to complement rotations offered so will be focused in the third and fourth year on outpatient psychiatry across the lifespan including training in a variety of psychotherapeutic modalities as well as training in the provision of integrated care.  A seminar in administrative psychiatry will also be provided as will a transition to practice seminar. 


Year Four

PGY4’s will continue in some of their outpatient continuity clinics including psychopharm and psychotherapy treatments. The remainder of the fourth year will be elective and residents will be encouraged to choose administrative work for at least a portion of their elective time. This will allow for smooth transition to practice.

PGY4’s will do 1 week of evening float on their own 2 weeks with a PGY1. Evening Float is Noon - 10:00pm at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.
