Broadlawns Nurse Receives International DAISY Award for Exceptional Care Awards and Recognitions Press Release August 15, 2019 Des Moines, Iowa (August 12, 2019) – Broadlawns Medical Center (BMC) is pleased to announce that a member of its nursing staff received The DAISY Award, an international recognition of exceptional nurses. The 2019 DAISY Award recipient for BMC is Nancy Parkey. “Broadlawns is proud to celebrate the extraordinary compassion and skillful care given by our nurses every day,” said Susan Kirstein, Broadlawns Chief Nursing Officer. Ms. Parkey was recognized amongst her peers at a recent award ceremony where she was presented with a certificate, pin and a Healer’s Touch sculpture. The Healer’s Touch sculpture is serpentine stone and is hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. The Shona people have deep respect for their traditional healers. About the Honoree Ms. Parkey is a Registered Nurse in BMC’s Medical Surgical Unit. A native of Carlisle, Iowa, Ms. Parkey earned her Certified Nursing Assistant certification from Des Moines Area Community College and her Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Kaplan University (acquired by Purdue University in 2017). Ms. Parkey has been passionate about health care since entering the field at age 14. She is a legacy nurse at BMC, following in her grandmother’s footsteps. Ms. Parkey is most proud of being a mother to her 11-month-old son, Maverick. Ms. Parkey was nominated by several patients. One patient wrote, “She gives excellent care and is willing to help at all times. She respects not only her patients, but her team as well. She is a truly excellent nurse and deserves this award.” About the Daisy Award The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation was formed in January 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an autoimmune disease. The Barnes family was awestruck by the exceptional nursing care that their son Patrick received throughout his eight week illness, and they established The DAISY Award to recognize the extraordinary clinical skills and compassionate care that nurses provide to patients every day.
