Current Projects and Fundraising Initiatives
The Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation is committed to raising community awareness and financial support for Broadlawns Medical Center. As the community hospital, we are dedicated to serving the most vulnerable populations and providing access to high quality healthcare to the underserved and at-risk individuals within our community.
The Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation is currently focused on securing funding for the following initiatives that will enhance our facilities and expand our servicing capacity.
Surgery Remodel and Expansion
Broadlawns Medical Center is expanding its surgery department. Within the enhanced surgical space, Broadlawns is incorporating two additional operating suites and adding a second endoscopy suite. The newly configured surgery department will provide for phase one and phase two recovery areas as well as sixteen private pre-operative suites to accommodate visitors while they wait for loved ones during surgery. The new surgery department will better accommodate patients and visitors in a medically current environment. Construction commenced in the fall of 2020 with an anticipated completion date of fall 2021.
Variety Children’s Charity Pediatric Clinic Improvements
The Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation is raising funds to enhance and expand the physical and psychological level of care for the Central Iowa youth served in the Broadlawns Variety Children’s Charity Pediatric Clinic. Funds raised will expand access to the number of children that can receive critical childhood screenings and services, upgrade the facilities for increased safety and functionality, and create a positive environment to alleviate stress and anxiety that often accompanies a pediatric medical visit.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy System for Early Cancer Detection and Treatment
In 2020, 1,831 women turned to Broadlawns Mammography for affordable high-quality, culturally competent mammography and breast biopsy care. Funds are being raised to upgrade our stereotactic breast biopsy system, which is crucial to providing patients with early and definitive diagnosis of suspicious breast tissue. This technology allows for earlier detection for some of our most vulnerable women facing serious health situations and helps to reduce late-stage breast cancer diagnosis and death.
Broadlawns’ TEACH/TECH job training program provides paid healthcare apprenticeships to at-risk area youth and adults. All program graduates are offered a career opportunity at Broadlawns as a CNA. Over 100 individuals have completed the TEACH/TECH job training program, and 48.5% of graduates are still employed at Broadlawns, earning a living wage.
The FOCUS Children’s Mental Health Program provides intensive outpatient therapy for Des Moines Public Schools students who have no other path forward. The FOCUS program provides youth with the skills and care they need to overcome barriers and complete their education.
