Rebecca Lundquist, MD

Job Title

Psychiatrist and director of the Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Program

What motivated you to become a doctor?

When I was a first year college student, I became fascinated as I learned that there were ways to help people struggling with psychiatric illness, and that those ways involved listening and getting to know people's strengths as well as their difficulties.

Why do you choose to work at Broadlawns Medical Center?

I love psychiatry residents! Working with resident physicians from when they finish medical school, through four years of training to become full fledged psychiatrist is incredible. And knowing the need for psychiatrists in Iowa makes it all the better!

What advice would you give your 10-year-old self, knowing what you know now?

Have more fun! Play more. There is PLENTY of time to be a grownup!

What do you love most about your job?

Watching the psychiatry residents learn and grow.

What advice do you have for women entering medicine?

Find other women and support each other at every step of the journey. Know that there are mentors and sponsors out there (men and women) and that each will teach you something different about yourself and your work. Work across professions and specialties to share what you know as well. If you are in high school or pre-med don't hesitate to reach out to your local hospital or clinic to see if someone will meet with you to talk with you about their journey.
