Family Medicine & Primary Care
What is a Primary Care Provider (PCP)?
A primary care provider (PCP) is a healthcare professional who practices general medicine and is typically your first point of contact for medical care. Your PCP is the person you should see for routine checkup, non-emergency medical concerns, and preventive healthcare. If you have a more complex health issue, your PCP can refer you to an appropriate specialist. They will also help identify any health risks you may face and offer guidance on how to prevent or manage those risks.
Types of PCPs
There are different types of primary care providers. The right one for you will depend on your individual needs:
-
Family practitioners provide care for individuals of all ages, from infants to seniors.
-
Pediatricians specialize in health and development of babies, children, and teenagers.
-
Internists (internal medicine doctors) focus on adult health, including prevention, diagnosis, and management of chronic conditions.
-
Obstetricians/Gynecologists (OB-GYNs) specialize in women's reproductive health, including pregnancy, childbirth and menopause.
-
Geriatricians focus on the unique healthcare needs of older adults, especially those with multiple or complex medical conditions.
