A Sister Sees a Remarkable Change in Her Brother at Broadlawns October 28, 2026 When Shanna Barton visits her brother, Brian Henshaw, she sees a change that has brought happiness and hope to their family. “He is truly himself again,” Shanna said. Brian has lived at Broadlawns Oakland Residential Care Facility for more than two years. During that time, he has made significant progress in managing his mental health and becoming more independent. Oakland provides a supportive environment for adults living with mental illness. Residents work with staff to develop treatment goals, build daily living skills, participate in therapy, and connect with others. For Shanna, some of the most encouraging changes are reflected in her daily conversations with Brian. “Every evening, he calls me to share details of his day, from the meals prepared by your cook to the outings planned, and the meaningful conversations he has with the staff. He is engaged, happy, and living his best life.” Those conversations have given Shanna an opportunity to reconnect with her brother in ways she deeply appreciates. “Brian’s mental clarity, genuine interest in my day, and his expressions of love and gratitude are priceless gifts,” Shanna said. “The work being done at Oakland has restored hope and joy to our family.” At Oakland, residents take an active role in their treatment, with support from staff as they work toward greater independence. For Brian, that care has made a difference in his daily life and his relationships with family. “Brian feels completely safe and cared for,” Shanna said. “I cannot thank Broadlawns enough for giving him this opportunity.” Broadlawns thanks Brian and Shanna for sharing their family's experience and recognizing the care provided by the Oakland team.
